If the two partners involved in a divorce cannot work together and cooperate, their divorce may drag on forever into an even longer, more stressful, and more painful situation for everyone involved. A long divorce can affect not just the two partners but also close family members, young children, and teenagers. By maintaining an open dialogue and honest communication with your divorce attorney and your ex-partner, you can help make the divorce process run more smoothly. The more quickly you divorce ends, the sooner you can move on with your life.
By maintaining their emotions and exercising common decency toward each other, the two partners can minimize the negative effect their divorce has on children. Children already must cope with frightening and confusing emotions during a divorce, and two fighting parents will not help them deal with their feelings in a healthy way. In fact, a messy divorce may even lead to emotional scarring later on. If each adult decides to make the effort to maintain civility and open communication, the divorce will proceed more smoothly and children will experience less negative results.
Many times, those in the midst of a divorce will receive harmful advice from relatives and friends. In an attempt to provide support, well-intentioned loved ones may advice the their friend against cooperating with his or her partner during the divorce process. They may encourage abrasive behavior, or advise against a compromise in order to always come out on top. Of course, loved ones are simply trying to display their love and support for a grieving divorcee during a difficult time. However, this well-intentioned advice is harmful in the end, as it just makes the divorce longer and more difficult.
What if you attempt to remain civil, but your spouse is uncooperative? If one person involved in a divorce refuses to cooperate, it can turn the entire process into an endless and even more painful ordeal. No matter how emotional and upset you are, keeping things on a civil level can make the divorce go more smoothly. Your efforts to keep things friendly and calm will help you to clearly discuss issues with your legal adviser. In fact, your attempts at a friendly divorce may even help you get the settlement you want. Make your divorce easier on yourself and your family by attempting to keep mutual respect with your spouse in order to more efficiently finish the process so that everyone can move on with their lives.
