There's a tradition of excellence in Alaskan fishing that lots of people simply don't understand who aren't from there. Most fishing villages are tight-knit communities, where the entire town breathes a collective sigh of relief when the boats return at the end of the season, but in Alaska, things are even more special. Those Alaska fishermen who go out year after year aren't just in their own community--they're also following a rich tradition of catching some of the best fish in the world, without depleting their populations or ruining the chances for the following season to be a banner year, too.
Unfortunately, fishermen around the world don't have the same approach as those in Alaska, and that's led to a drastic overfishing of many of the world's fish populations. It's become necessary for the average consumer to pay close attention to which fish are okay to purchase, and which ones are in need of replenishing their populations. Salmon is listed as okay on many lists, but what that really means isn't farm-raised salmon, but rather, Alaska Salmon.
There is a reason that gourmet shoppers, the world's finest chefs, and conscientious consumers all stock up on Alaska Salmon. It's a perfect storm of ideal conditions that leads to a fish as delicious as one of these salmon, and each of them has an incredible life story that begins in one of the many bubbling rivers across Alaska, where the fish are hatched. They spend a safe and happy period of time in the fresh and pure Alaskan rivers before making their way out into the cool, icy waters of the ocean, where they practically triple in size inside of a year.
The cleanliness of the waters coupled with the opportunity to actually grow to their appropriate size before being caught is why Alaska Salmon are so in demand at grocery stores and in fine restaurants around the country. While many other countries would overfish the salmon the minute they started spawning, in Alaska, there are actual laws in place that prevent too many fleets from emerging on a single group of salmon at once.
So thankfully, the delicious and all-natural taste of Alaska Salmon will be ours to try year after year, because the practices in place that are rooted in fishing tradition of old ensure that the population has the chance to replenish itself. There's absolutely no better choice, for taste or for the environment, than some salmon from the waters of Alaska.
