The Fat Snowball Effect

If you have been sedentary a long time you know how hard it is to start exercising. If you have been exercising regularly for a long time you know what it means to make exercise a part of your daily routine. The body adjusts to its environment. If you place it in a sedentary environment it will respond by accumulating fat. This fat will slow the metabolism and require nourishment. The result will be more fat. It is like a snowball - the fatter it gets, the more fat that will accumulate. As fat accumulates it becomes more difficult to begin to become active as a heavier, fatter body is harder to move than a lighter more fit body.

On the other hand, if you place your body in an active environment, it will respond by becoming more fit. Muscle will be added and the metabolism will increase. The fitter you become the easier it becomes to burn calories. A highly trained individual who can run 8 minutes a mile will burn 70 percent more calories in a half an hour of exercise than a sedentary individual who can only walk at 20 minutes a mile.

So, fit or fat, you must act now. If you are overweight there should be no delay - start exercising now. It won't get any easier tomorrow. If you are fit, continue to build upon your foundation. Don't take long breaks. Be consistent with your exercise. As they say a rolling stone gathers no fat!
