It appears as if many of the walk in rental shops have slammed their doors for good. Netflix and other companies have dominated the market with their convenient mail method, but now it is beginning to look like even this relatively new method of dissemination could be usurped by the newest technological advancement, online streaming.
It just does not get any more simple than clicking on a website, choosing from a wide variety of videos, purchasing with your credit or debit card, and streaming the movie right there on the spot in high quality streaming video. You can view the show on your computer screen or jack a projector into your laptop for a larger picture.
As of right now, internet cable bandwidths vary, but as they grow faster there is no reason why web viewing would not become the last answer for movie rentals. The next evolution will be an addition to this step, companies can make it easy for consumers to actually own these videos and either hold them on their computer drives or encode them onto a DVD in high definition to add to their disc collection. While this technology is available already, it has not been completely simplified for the people. But, we have witnessed it happen with MP3s, and movies are the nearest evolutionary step.
It pains me to see the ma and pop rental businesses close their gates, and even the multimillion dollar corporate businesses, but I will confess that I just enjoy the instant gratification online viewing supplies.
Eric is considering secure video hosting for his business. He hopes it will be as good as Youtube.
