The Economics and Social History of Coffee

Gourmet coffee houses and cafes have been around for hundreds of years, but it has not been until relatively recently that gourmet coffee has caught on with the masses. Coffee shops originated in the Middle East and Mediterranean and quickly spread throughout the rest of Europe. As coffee shops gained in popularity, patrons became more particular with the selections that were available. While gourmet coffee has achieved mainstream status, the search is always going to discover the next best flavor and richness that only gourmet roasters and cocoa bean farms are able to produce.

With many countries including the U.S. are experiencing serious financial stress due to recession, many people are making a choice to reduce their spending and consumption of these expensive gourmet beverages. Even though many cafes have resorted to advertising specials and discounts in order to maintain projected revenue, sales continue to remain stagnant or only show mediocre growth.

There is a more inexpensive economic alternative to spending hard earned money on the inflated prices that retail coffee shops charge. Remember that those high prices being charged are paying for the labor, rent, insurance, electricity, hardware and shipping of product of those coffee houses. Some individuals have taken to purchasing whole coffee beans and personally grinding them in order to minimize the cost of paying retail stores for their product.

The challenge is finding a store which has a large variety of gourmet coffees and at a decent price. Large chain companies will have a limited variety with the goal of making a profit based upon moving volume of product. Independently owned cafes may be able to provide a much larger selection, but not have the resources to serve large communities.

One of the best avenues to explore, however, is the online world. Internet coffee companies can afford to be extremely competitive with price points due to the fact that the expense of running this type of business is minimal. There is not as high an overhead of labor, electricity, insurance and so on.

There are a few things to consider when purchasing gourmet coffees online. A major consideration, of course, is price. An equally important aspect to consider is if the coffee is Fair Trade Certified.

Fair Trade refers to paying the farmers a fair and decent price for the coffee which is harvested. Many coffee brands and major corporations, such as fast food cafes, prey upon the desperation of the cocoa bean farmer and charge inflated prices without any concern for what is right. By purchasing from these low quality fast food corporations, the customer is encouraging unfair and unethical treatment of the farmers and harvesters. Choosing a Fair Trade Certified coffee will help to ensure that cocoa bean farmers are able to afford to produce a quality product for the end consumer.

Many websites provide additional information on the topic of specialty coffee and coffee grinding. One such site worth visiting is http://www.albertleacoffee.com.
