The Easy Way to Create Sewing Patterns

Creating sewing patterns could be a necessity as well as fun too. Sometimes you may not be too satisfied with the way the dress you bought, fits you but you can't also give up on it because it has caught your eyes so badly!

For these times you might just buy the dress and do the required alteration by yourself! And to design your own sewing patterns could be fun, since you can make it fit you just the way you want it and create sewing patterns of your own.

For this you would need a sewing pattern paper. A blank paper, pencil and a measuring tape.

Steps that could be followed to create sewing patterns:

On the blank paper two perpendicular lines need to be drawn to the left corner of the page and a horizontal line at the bottom. The designs would need to be filled within these lines.

Two things to be measured next are the - waist line, to be measured where it is the widest and the frontline, which starts from the apex of ribcage and runs to the navel. Accurate measurements are necessary for proper fit.

The measurements need to be depicted on the paper on which the vertical and horizontal lines were drawn. The scale should be the same not too large to be of the actual length. If you have made a representative measurement rather than the real then keep the measurements proportionate to the scale you have chosen.

The side front line must be measured next which would start at the same point as the front line just this one would be measured to the side of the neck. This helps to find out where your shoulder seam is located. These need to be put on the sheets too.

Then measure the distance between the shoulder seam and the waist. Start from the shoulder seam. Also put this on the draft paper.

The distance between the centre front line and the outside of your shoulder seam would give you the shoulder seam. Put this on the draft paper like the previous times. Begin measuring from the center front line's waist point and move till the shoulder seam. These should be drawn on the sheets also.

The measurement of the width of the body would give you the requirements for the side seam. First put the measuring tape at the center front line and measure till the side seam at the chest level. Do the same for the waist level. Put both of these lines on the sheets.

The side seam will be finally measured when you start at the middle point between the waist and the chest. Measurement from this point to the side seam needs to be done and then taken vertically up. Again drawing this on the sheet is necessary.

Neck curves and arm curves need to be measured by drawing a line from the side frontline up to the center front line around the neck portion and the arm's side seam. Finally these put into the paper, you would have drafted your own sewing patterns.
