The Dearest Sight in the World

The kangaroo rat does not hibernate. So my pet Mr. Kanga conscientiously put a portion of the food I gave him in a corner under wisps of straw. But Mrs. Roo was not conscientious, she didn't think of the future and she had never heard of saving. The minute Mr. Kangar was four inches away from his food cache Mrs. Roo whisked it and filled her pouches. Mr. Kangar regarded her sadly but made no move to protect his treasure.

One day Mr. Kangar did not empty his pouches. Awhile later and Mrs. Roo could stand the strain no longer. She decided to browbeat Mr. Kangar out of his rightful property. She chased her poor husband around and around in the box. Then although I had never thought of Mr. Kangar as a worm, he decidedly turned. He boxed Mrs. Roo with his forepaw, then made a running jump and kicked her soundly with his two hind feet. A boxing match ensued with Mr. Kangar as the winner. But five minutes later he emptied the grain from his pouch with a sweeping motion of his hand and in less than two minutes Mrs. Roo was eating it. This was their only quarrel.

Dad and I read many books together and often I took my kangaroo rats into the library. They had the time of their lives. Mr. Kangar perched in the middle of the floor and gravely surveyed Dad. Finally he skipped around to the back of the overstuffed rocking chair, scrambled to the top and perched on Dad's shoulder. Dad was too preoccupied with "Golf Without Tears" to pay any attention. Mr. Kangar hopped down Dad's arm and on to the pages of the book where he calmly proceeded to wash his tail and then his little quivering nose.

"Well, little fellow, where did you come from?" chuckled Dad. Mr. Kangar's innocent eyes sparkled; then he hopped mincingly down and curled up between the cushion and the arm of the rocker and fell asleep-a tiny ball of fawn-colored fluff. And so Dad forgot forever his grudge against the kangaroo rat.

Katy conceived the idea of letting "the darlin's" hop about on the screened-in porch at night. There I put a box of sand for them to play in. One morning we thought they were lost. The whole family hunted madly in every nook and corner. Then mother caught a movement in my flame colored bathing suit that I had carelessly hung on the doorknob. She lifted off my bathing cap and there was Mr. Kangar's tail extending out one armhole and Mrs. Roo's pert little nose out the other. It was the dearest sight in the world. Then I noticed that the two had cut with their sharp little teeth about seven square inches out of the bathing suit. So I put them back in their box and made them a present of the flame-colored garment. They spent the rest of the day gnawing this into tiny squares.
