There are many dangers associated with inflatable air beds and infants. It has been found that many parents travel in the months between September and January. During these peak travel times for families, many parents carry an air bed, or are provided an air bed to sleep on at a friend's or relative's house when they visit there.

In many of these cases, parents are traveling with infants and may lay them on the mattress to sleep. Unfortunately, many infants have been seriously injured and have even met their death on these types of beds. Here, you will learn about the dangers of inflatable air beds and infants.

One of the first complications in which air beds pose to infants is that they are simply too soft. It is important to understand that air beds are not the only types of beds that are too soft for safe infant sleep. Adult beds that are made to be soft, and even the ever-popular waterbed mattress are also too soft for infants to sleep on.

What happens is that there are often creases in the air bed. When an infant is places on it, even the slightest turn or movement can cause the small mouth and nose air to go down into the crease of the mattress. Naturally, this can result in suffocation.

Many parents mistakenly believe that if the air mattress is firm, this is not an issue. However, regardless of how soft and/or firm the air bed inflates to, this can be an issue.

The next complication that is experienced with infants that are placed on inflatable air beds is that many times the bed will have a slow leak. The parent may leave the infant unattended while it sleeps, to come back and find that the air has been omitted from the mattress and the material has trapped the infant on the inside bottom.

Naturally, most parents who have experienced this situation have found that their child has died as a result of suffocating under the weight of the material from the bed. For this reason, a child should never be left unattended on this type of bed. Suffocation and injury are relatively common.

If you will be traveling as a parent, it is absolutely essential that you take the time to pack up a bed that is appropriate for the child's age and avoid using inflatable air beds. Sure, on the most part, inflatable beds are convenient, inexpensive, comfortable, and safe as well. However, for the infant or relatively small child, these beds are a health hazard.
