The most challenging aspect in determining if you have osteoporosis is in the lack of symptoms. Unfortunately, osteoporosis is revealed through fractures of bones. Generally, the bones that are greatly affected by this disease are in the areas of the hips, ribs, back and wrists. State-of-the-art testing for osteoporosis is a necessity in order to alleviate problems and progression.

Should you develop osteoporosis, your chances for breaking vital bones are extremely heightened. Such risks can definitely have a devastating impact upon your quality of life. Therefore, for you to be aware of the onset of osteoporosis is essential. Advanced testing can prove if you have or are developing osteoporosis. From such a test, a course of treatment can be medically prescribed to alleviate the ill-effects of this ailment.

A DEXA test is now considered to be the medical gold standard in detecting osteoporosis. The devastating effect of osteoporosis reduces bone mineral density. This causes bone mass to become more fragile and weak. DEXA, as an acronym, stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. The DEXA test can provide you, and your doctor, with the amount of bone mineral density that your bones have.

The DEXA test is similar to undergoing an X-ray. Conducted by a certified, skilled and trained radiology technician, two separate X-ray beams will be aimed at certain bones within your body. Each beam will have a different energy level. This unique process has the capability to scan right through the layers of soft tissue, otherwise referred to as skin, and capture the images of the bones. Based upon complete studies of bone density measurement, the technology supporting dual energy X-ray absorptiometry has been proven to be very accurate. DEXA is the overall preferred test to determine if you have osteoporosis.

As a woman, if you have reached the age of sixty-five or over, it is highly recommended to receive a DEXA test. The purpose of receiving such testing is to provide your doctor with a scan of what level your bone mineral density is at. Such results can be your best defense or precaution against the ravaging effects of osteoporosis.

Other tests, such as blood work and standard X-rays, do exist in diagnosing osteoporosis. However, the DEXA technique furnishes the most accurate diagnosis available.

Again, if you are a mature woman or have suffered from bone fractures, see your primary care doctor soon. Your doctor can then refer you to a radiologist, who will conduct a DEXA Test for osteoporosis.

Upon receiving the results from your DEXA Test, you will be set on a path towards skeletal well-being. Once osteoporosis is detected, your doctor can prescribe the course of treatment that is best for you. Such a treatment plan can bring you assurance, as well as to ensure better bone health.

Are you looking to prevent osteoporosis? Are you feeling that you need to lose weight as well? Check out the diet plan that will keep you healthy, active and feeling like yourself while aiding in preventing osteoporosis.
