Or risk the chance of scratching your car's body paint and your expensive bike when you're fitting it at the back of the trunk?
Won't it be easier if you just had bought a bike car rack in the first place? Installing the rack on top your car is fairly easy, and now you're only faced with lifting your bike and positioning it into place so that you can clamp your bike to the rack. And if you're not carrying your bikes in the rack, you can use the racks to carry other stuff such as skies, coolers or other bulky equipment.
