When the conversation gets around to you to talk about your particular field, you may be confronted with an opportunity to bash the competition. At this moment you will reveal a part of you that is either going to deepen your relationship with the other person or weaken it. A simple gesture or look can tell the other person how you feel about the competition.
If you are a big believer in competition then you know why it exists and what it is doing there. We live in a society that encourages competition because of the value it adds to the whole. This is not some abstract economic theory. Healthy competition keeps us sharp and keeps raising the bar for what a business like yours can do. Good competition will push and stretch the limits of what is possible in all facets of our lives.
If the truth me known, your competition is your best friend!
Do not be one of those who think that the goal is to destroy the competition. This is a very fatal error. If you could succeed in destroying all your competitors you would also be destroying your own field.
Most salespeople are taught never to speak ill of the competition. If you do ill of the competition it will only make you look bad. It is best to say nothing about the competition unless asked about a competitor.
If you are speaking with a prospect and they bring up the competitor you should go out of your way to say something positive about him or her. This is not to show the other person you are a good guy. It is simply out of respect for the competition and demonstrating respect earns respect.
When you tear down your competitor, it actually diminishes you in the eyes of the other person. The opposite is true if you speak kindly of your competitor. It will actually build you up and the other person will gain a better sense of your integrity.
What the other person sees when you speak openly about your competitors is the confidence you have in your product or service. If you knock the competition it may at first appear you are confident but this perception is short lived. When speaking of the competition be genuine, this confidence will breed confidence.
You are successful
If you are genuinely confident, then you will be successful. If you look around you at all the unsuccessful people it is probably because they do not have that sort of genuine confidence in themselves.
You are safe
If you speak highly of your competition, then the other person knows instinctively they will never have to worry about what you say about them behind their back.
Just a final note if you tear down another person or their business it will reflect poorly on you. Take the high road and build your competition. You will create a confidence that reflects quite well on you.
