The Common Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

Expert Author Barbara T Moore

When women suffer from yeast infections, they often find that the majority of their symptoms manifest in the vaginal area. But, because a yeast infection shares a number of it's symptoms with other common vaginal infections such as cystitis, a yeast overgrowth can be pretty tricky to spot. Read on to find out more about the common yeast infections symptoms, and find out if you're symptoms are being caused by an overgrowth of yeast cells...

Your vaginal discharge... One of the more common symptoms of a yeast infection is a change in vaginal discharge. The amount of discharge a woman produces throughout the monthly cycle will vary, and there are usually noticeable changes around the time of ovulation. But, the discharge caused by a yeast overgrowth is usually identifiable by its thick and creamy constancy. Your discharge my look a little like cottage cheese, and it will certainly be different from your usual discharge.

Another tell tale sign is that your discharge may have a yeast like smell. This isn't an unpleasant smell, and it usually smells similar to bread. The yeast smell and the thick and creamy consistency are often the first signs of a yeast infection, so be sure to look out for both.

A burning sensation... This is where things can get a little confusing. When women experience a burning sensation during urination, they usually assume that they are suffering from cystitis, but this isn't always the case. The vaginal symptoms of a yeast infection can be very similar to those associated with cystitis, which makes the two infections difficult to differentiate.

There are also a number of STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) that will also cause pain or discomfort during urination. If you're having this problem, then be sure to make an appointment with your doctor. A simple urine sample and swab test will be able to pick up a urinary infection, or STD you may have.

Vaginal discomfort... As well as pain during urination, you may find that your your vagina is particularly itchy and sore. It's most commonly the vaginal opening (the vulva) and the pernium that are the worst affected areas. This general discomfort can be very uncomfortable, and you may find it hard to resit scratching, but try to avoid this at all costs. Scratching the itchy areas will only worsen your symptoms, and cause them to spread further.

The next step... If you are experiencing these or similar vaginal symptoms avoid using OTC (over the counter) or prescribed medications as a treatment option. These quick fixes will only mask your symptoms temporarily, and your infection will soon flare up again after a week or two. Instead, you need to remove all yeast triggers, as well as changing to a yeast free diet and lifestyle. Making just a few simple changes to your diet and making an effort to boost your immune system is all it takes to ease those nasty symptoms and cure your yeast infection for good.
