The Chinese Secret to Weight Loss

I recently returned from China, a wonderful and friendly cultured country. I was fortunate that I lived there for approximately 4 months with my family. At first, we were completely overwhelmed with the number of people, since the crowds can be very large. But more importantly, it's the food that really impacted us the most. You see, all of us lost weight in China. And it's not because we ate less. In fact, I believe we ate as much if not more than we did back home. There were some instances were we would have 7, 8, or even 9 course meals at the restaurant just for the four of us. Apparently this is normal in some parts of China.

The Chinese diet is very wide. It's not your ordinary meat and potatoes. The Chinese eat a very large array of vegetables, rice, noodles, meat, fish, seafood, and fruits. The only food product I noticed that the Chinese do not like is cheese, however yogurt is popular. The other characteristic of Chinese food is that is always cut up in small pieces for cooking and serving. Of course this makes sense since you have to eat with chop sticks. Can you imagine eating a steak without a knife and use solely your sticks? Good luck!

When it comes to weight loss, you rarely see an obese Chinese person; on average they look very fit and lean. How can a culture eat so much and not gain weight? Well there might be several reasons, but from my experience the secret is in the preparation of the food. I am referring to having every piece of food cut into small bite sizes every time you eat.

This may sound very simple, but when you are eating with Chop sticks, you cannot eat as fast as you would normally with a knife and fork. You are limited to the size of the sticks, and you can only eat one piece at a time. Unfortunately, you can't have a piece of turkey, mash potatoes, some peas, dressing, and gravy on the same bite and swallow the whole thing. At the Chinese diner table, you have no choice - everything is cut up (whether you like it or not) and you have to eat one small bite size at a time.

As a result, you are taking more time to eat, and that's always fun. But is also gives time for your body to process your food. In addition, what's really surprising is that you never feel so full you feel your belly was going to explode. You could eat all that food and walk out of the restaurant and feeling good, satisfied and comfortable.

I lost 20 pounds, and my partner lost 30 pounds and we both agreed that eating with chop sticks is a great way to lose weight.
