The Best Time Of The Year For Trout Fishing

Expert Author Trevor Kugler

In this article I will outline and discuss the best time of the year for trout fishing. When I use the term 'trout fishing' I'm of course referring to freshwater trout such as rainbow and brook trout, not any type of saltwater trout species. I have been fishing for and catching freshwater trout for more than two decades and in that time I have learned that one time of the year stands out above all of the others as the flat out best time of the year to catch trout.

That time of year is called the fall. As the weather cools off and most people's attention turns to other activities, fishing for trout becomes more productive than any other time of the year. In my experience there is little doubt that the fall is the best time of the year for catching trout. Not only do I catch trout in larger numbers during the fall, but many of my trophy trout (trout over twenty inches) are caught during the fall as well.

So, why is this the case? Why do trout seem to bite better during the fall of the year? I have a few theories on this phenomenon and the one that makes the most sense is this; as the days become shorter and air and water temperatures begin to drop, trout instinctively realize that winter is going to be setting in soon. And as water and air temperatures drop, so does a trout's' metabolism, making them much less "hungry".

For these reasons, while the water and air temperatures are much more ideal for the trout, the trout eat as much as they can before the onslaught of winter. In many ways I believe that they are "stocking up" on food before the long cold days of winter make getting food much more difficult. This is good news for trout fishermen and means that trout fishing is much more productive. If you are in search of trout fishing tips a great one is to plan your fishing trips around the weather and moon. In other words try to be on the water fishing for trout when the weather and/or moon are most conducive to the activity level of the trout you are attempting to catch. As far as trout fishing tips are concerned, this is one of the best you will ever get.

The bottom line is that the best time of the year for trout fishing is the fall of the year, so this fall make sure that you get out there and fish for some trout. Believe me, you won't be disappointed, especially if the weather and/or moon are in you favor.
