The Best Speed Training Workout For Any Athlete, Anywhere, Anytime!

Expert Author Brandon Richey

There is no question that in order to build speed you have got to be able to execute various speed resisted and quick foot drills, however you can't do these effectively without the element of strength in the picture. I remember back when I was a kid playing baseball that the hitting part of my game developed a little slower than other areas that my playing performance required. I remember that I could see the ball very well, but for some reason or another early on I couldn't match the leather up with the bat. This being one problem in my game I noticed a blessing in another area. I noticed that I could naturally cover a lot of ground on the field of play for the defensive part of my game! I had speed.

Now fortunately the hitting portion of my game eventually improved, but I found that even as a kid that I could play on my strengths involved in playing the game of baseball. You see even at a young age I recognized that by having speed I could hold my own with most anyone. In addition to this early on I was fascinated with strength training. I would engage in executing push ups and I got myself into lifting weights as early as I could back in those days.

As I started to progress my training and working out well into my early teenage years I felt like I had a lot more "spring" in my legs with the addition of executing even simple body weight drills. I didn't know it, but at the time the strength training I was engaging in was effective core training which allowed me to have a solid base of body control for the action of speed and speed development. I was creating a foundation of strength that gave me total body control so that I could better perform on the field of play throughout my baseball and football playing years. I participated in a lot of weight training, but I also did a ton of various push ups, body weight squats, squat jumps, and various other plyometrics that didn't require any equipment at all.

In short the best speed training workout that I found myself engaging in was simple core strength training by utilizing nothing more than my own body resistance. This increased my power output and kept me strong so that I could continue to improve. I admit that its not the thought of what most today would consider "speed training," but the fact is that it is! You see you can't have that explosiveness and quick burst without the element of strength.

If you haven't already started to engage in body weight drills such as this then you should reconsider. This is a workout that you can do anywhere and at anytime. This is one of the greatest speed training workouts that you can possibly do. Remember that most athletes can train hard, but only the best train smart my friend!
