The Best Protection From Identity Theft

Don't think you need protection from identity theft? Unfortunately our current economic issues all around the world placed us in a more vulnerable state where thieves want everything and anything, no matter what.

So what you make less than $50,000 or $30,000 or even $20,000 a year; if you have good or marginal credit then you are at risk and need some form of protection from identity theft. And here's the scary part - if your identity is stolen you may not find out until a year or two to four years down the road. One day you'll want to switch cell phone carriers and will be denied credit and that's when you'll learn all the damaging tradelines listed on your credit report(s).

There are thieves that target certain groups of people because it will take more time for them to learn that their identity was compromised. Not everyone checks their credit report every year; even though it's free, many seniors fail to check their reports. Most are retired and are not interested in opening any new accounts or buying new cars, homes or any large purchases so they rarely find out their identity has been stolen until years later.

But as you can see from our current economic downfall, there may be times you must use new credit, no matter your age or location you live in. Many seniors found themselves having to refinance their home this past year and many found out their identity had been stolen and credit damaged. Can you imagine what position they were placed in? Not enough savings and to top it all off, they were unable to get new credit.

Waiting also makes it difficult to track down the culprits; usually thieves will continue to use your credit until they find it's been placed on hold. You could wind up owning thousands of dollars and left to prove you're not the person responsible. Even then many creditors simply do not care that you were not the one who opened new credit accounts and splurged on everything. Credit card companies hold you responsible for a minimum amount and this quickly adds up when you are not covered with protection from identity theft.

This is why the newest insurance for personal identity protection has skyrocketed in the past few years. Many people, especially seniors are becoming aware of the risks and utilizing personal identity theft protection from companies like Identity Guard and Protect my ID. These types of companies insure your good name for up to a million dollars in case your identity is stolen and the thieves go on a shopping spree. The companies also include alerts that automatically contact you if your name or social security number pops up on their radar - and they cover many public arenas.

You would think spotlighting this type of theft would deter criminals but identity theft is on the rise. With new technology and more people relying on the internet thieves see the advantages of remaining anonymous. Without any protection from identity theft you are left out in the open wondering if you can protect yourself in a satisfactory manner. Have you covered all the bases? And do you really know where all the bases are?
