Arnica cream is made from the Arnica Montana plant which has been used for centuries aiding in the relief of muscular pains and aches. Otherwise commonly known as 'Leopards Bane' or 'Mountain Tobacco' it is a small plant that grows to about 2 feet in height. It is also a member of the sunflower family and it produces bright yellow / orange flowers.
From the middle ages right through to the present time chemists and doctors alike have realised the relieving and soothing power of this wonderuful plant. It can be used in a variety of ways and is available in health food stores today in a wide array of different forms such as ointment, oil, tincture, pills and cream. Traditionally it was used in mixtures to reduce the symptoms of sore tired muscles and joint pain. It is also noted for its apparent anti-inflammatory properties and is available in internal and topical forms. Although available as a regular over the counter herb we do not recommend the use of internal forms unless advised by your naturopath.
The cream can be especially useful in relieving headaches caused by neck and back pains. By simply applying the cream to the painful / tight muscles in your back and neck the muscles can relax and ease any headaches associated with the tight muscles. It can be used also in the healing process after fractures, as it relieves swelling and soothes the affected area providing temporary relief from the pain.
The active components of Arnica based remedies come from the blossom extract. The main active component is sesquiterpene lactone, responsible for the anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. Other active components include thymol which is an essential oil, flavonoids, inulin, carotenoids and tannins.
This wonderful plant is yet another example of mother natures ability to provide us with invaluable natural resources to aid in the relief of common pains and aches. Literally hundreds of creams, ointments and medicines today are made with Arnica extract for its value in pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties alone make it a very valuable plant!
