The Basics of Link Building - How to Effectively Position a Website in the Search Rankings!

Expert Author Paul Melendez

Learning the basics of link building is very important in order for your site to rank well in the search rankings. Link building is when you have other websites post a link to your website. There are good and bad ways to do link building, so make sure you put together the right plan for your business.

This article reviews the most basic forms of link building and the pros and cons of each.

1) Manual Link Building - Contacting Websites to Request a Link to Your Site

The most labor intensive way to build links is through manual link exchange. This means you are not using any of the automated link request software are the market (try to stay away from them).

The way you find the sites to request a link from is fairly easy. Pick a search term that you want to rank well for. For example, if you own a pizza place in Babylon, New York, a good search term may be "Babylon Pizza" or "Babylon pizza shop".

Once you have selected the search term or terms that are important to you, do a search in Google for that search term. The first 25 to 50 websites that appear in the results are the best ones for you to try to get a link from.

Send an email to the webmaster (this contact information will be somewhere on the website) and offer them a link to their site if you put one to your site. You may not get a high return on your time investment, but any site you get will be a valuable one.

2) Paid Link Building - Buying Links from Other Sites

Industrious online experts came up with a variety of different ways to buy links. There are websites specifically devoted to link building where you can pay to have your link appear on relevant websites. The cost can get pretty high.

The advantage to this type of link building is it is very time-effective. You can get relevant links quickly if you are willing to pay the price. The disadvantage is that Google specifically states that this strategy is not ethical and can penalize a website if they find out you bought links.

3) Content Distribution - Building Links through Content

This option is highly effective. Distributing articles and press releases online that include a link to your website means you will have a link on a page with content that is relevant to your website.

You can post articles on article directory sites, as well as distribute press releases. Other forms of content distribution include: blog and forum posting; and posting on social media sites.

If you have the ability to create content for your site, then it is always a good idea to distribute content that includes a link back to your website.

4) Link Building - The Bottom Line

There are other forms, but the three above are the most common. Allocation of resources is typically how a company determines which alternative is the best. There is a strong trend towards content distribution and social media marketing as the key forms of this online tactic.

Do not engage in any types of link building that can get your site penalized or banned. Stay away from paid links and link farms. It may take longer to get incoming links but it is well worth the additional time and expense.
