The Basics of Golf

Golf is a sport enjoyed by many wherein a player's objective is to strike a small ball into a hole several meters away and just big enough for the ball to fit into using different types of golf clubs. The playing area is called a course where there are usually 9 or 18 holes several meters apart from each other, depending on the vastness of the playing field. One hit of the ball is called a stroke, and the idea of the game is to finish the entire course with the least number of strokes to put the ball into each hole within the course.

As each hole has a unique design, the player has to decide which club, driver, wedge, or putter to use to drive the ball into a hole several meters away from the teeing ground. The number of these different types of clubs reaches as high as fourteen.

The game of golf can be played in various ways. A common version called the stroke play declares someone a winner if he has made the least number of strokes to complete a course. Another is called the stableford points play wherein the player who gets the maximum number of points is declared the winner. The match play, on the other hand, can by played by individuals or teams, with the person or persons who get the lowest score in individual holes are declared winners.

Since golf was first introduced in 1456 AD in Edinburgh, Scotland, its fame has skyrocketed to almost every country in the world. Professionals and amateurs alike are spending most of their time in golf courses to enjoy the sport. People like Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam have even attained worldwide fame because of their extraordinary skills at playing the game.

Although how the game of golf is played has gone through several changes all throughout the years, it has never failed to awaken and hold the interest of all kinds of people from all over the world.
