The blog as we know it today, evolved from the online diary where individuals would keep a record or a running account of events in their personal lives. The word is a contraction of "web log" where entries are displayed in reverse chronological order.
"Blogging" means to add content to or maintain a blog. They use text, images and links to other blogs. Readers can leave comments and this is an important part of many blogs.
Blogs have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their role in news-breaking stories. Key information can be highlighted and events analyzed, with views being expressed on many issues, including political issues. Blogging has had a great (negative) impact on newspaper corporations and the journalism industry owing to diminishing circulations.
There are different types of blogs, which vary in the way content is written and in the type of content.
- 1. Ones which focus on fashion, education, travel, politics, or on a particular subject are fairly common. Art and music are another two genres.
- 2. Some are used in businesses or corporations in two ways. Firstly to improve communications internally and secondly externally to promote marketing, public relations or branding. These are called corporate blogs. Those for clubs and societies are known as club blogs.
- 3. The most frequently encountered is the personal or individual blog. Bloggers communicate their ongoing life's events and happenings, successes and achievements even if they are never read. One type of personal blog allows bloggers to seize a moment in time and share feelings and thoughts with family and friends in an instant. Twitter sites and others like it are much speedier than emails or writing.
- 4. A blog which is composed by a mobile device such as a mobile phone or PDA may be called a moblog.
- 5. Some are also categorized by media type. For instance, one which is made up of videos is known as a vlog, or if photos, it's called a photoblog. Those which contain mixed media types and shorter posts came to be called tumblelogs.
Blogs on the internet are socially networked and interconnected by means of linkbacks, backlinks, blogrolls and comments. Involvement in this community brings us into the blogosphere. It seems that the role of blogs in our everyday lives, whether corporate, political or social will continue to impact us.
