The Artist and the Internet Marketer

Expert Author Julian Gearing

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the saying goes. My wife runs an art shop and has just spent seven days working meticulously on a painting. As she puts the final touches to it, it makes me realize the contrast between products that some people make and what Internet marketers often sell.

Beauty is in my wife's painting but also in the system that Internet marketers use to sell digital products and services. My wife's one painting might sell for $1,000 but it is a one-off sale and then it is back to the drawing board - or canvas - to create another one.

Not so the digital product or service. Suppose you spend a week writing an e-book. It' s a hard slog but you know that the product can be sold again and again because it is digital. Same with a lot of the training that is sold on the Internet. Maybe it is in PDF files or videos, maybe a training talk that was given to a paying audience, yet recorded for posterity. The training course can be sold again and again. Not my wife's painting, though.

Yes, there are some limited edition art pictures, where copies are made and you get the privilege of buying one of only say 100 printed. But by and large, these are one-off creations, created with love, maybe, but limited - unless you are say Picasso - when it comes to bringing in substantial income.

My wife's painting costs $1,000. But then there are products that I sell online as an affiliate that bring me in this amount in commission - again and again and again. Some of the products I sell go for $10,000 with me pocketing 50% in commission. But I don't have to spend days crafting the product to then have to get on to crafting the next one. The products are in effect limitless. They can bringing me in commissions again and again. That's the beauty of this form of online marketing.

Whether you are selling a ClickBank e-book for a $10 commission or a digital product that sells for $1,000 or more, it is hard to beat the online digital product system.

I am lucky in that all I need is a computer and an Internet connection and I am in business. All my marketing is done in cyberspace. My wife, however, works at home on her painting but has to rent a shop to display her work and the work of others. Getting an audience for her work is not easy. If people pass by her shop, fine. Many, though, don't know it exists. She has to get the word out and that is not easy, though she does have a website to help publicize the shop.

As Internet marketers, we may struggle at times to get sales. Yet, please keep the thought of my wife wielding her paintbrush in mind when you grumble. If you get the art of marketing right, you get tons of profit. Once my wife has sold her painting, it's on to the next one. No comparison.
