Aquarium lights can create a dramatic effect when combined with the lighting of the room and the colors of fish. Different colors of bulbs certainly help in creating a fantasy-like glow. Fish tank lights do have that aesthetic factor. They make the aquarium environment otherworldly or, at least in some cases, presentable -- something to talk about with a guest or to admire privately.
However, there are some questions that need to be posed concerning these lighting fixtures. Are aquarium lights really necessary for fish to survive? Are these fish tank lights, on the other hand, dangerous to the health of your pets?
Lighting transforms an aquarium to a natural habitat
Some fish thrive on environments that are very close to the ones their species are used to. They are built for a certain kind of habitat though you may argue that they have not even seen that natural habitat if they were born in man-made environments. There are types of fish that do get agitated when not exposed to enough light.
Artificial lighting may not be that of an issue if your aquarium is placed near a window. Sunlight can stream through the tank to help the fish thrive. You will discover more vivid colors and less stress coming from your fish. Find out if your fish belong to the types that require at least 12 hours of daylight. You may require an adequate set of aquarium lights if your room is quite dim.
On the hours of lighting
The hours you use aquarium lights on your fish should be controlled, however. While fish may require a certain number of hours under lighting, they may also not do well when lighting goes beyond that number of hours. If you are not that sure that you would be able to monitor the number of hours you use fish tank lights on your pet fish, you should at least make use of aquarium lights that automatically turn off after a certain number of hours. Living in constant light can also be stressful. With your pet fish, as with humans, you should practice some moderation.
It depends on the fish
Conduct a research on the type of fish you have. Do you have a saltwater reef aquarium? If you do, your fish will require intense lighting for a certain number of hours a day. Get to know just how many hours of artificial lighting your fish require and can endure.
Consider the purpose of the lighting
It is all right to light your aquarium for aesthetic purposes, though it would be nicer to install fish tank lights for the benefit of your pet fish's health. However, if you do want some dramatic lighting, you can still go for it. Just turn off the lights when you have to or you will find stressed fish and increasingly growing green algae.
Fluorescent versus incandescent
This issue is related to your research on the lighting that your fish require. If your fish require hotter temperatures, as well as lighting, you can go for incandescent bulbs. Note though that incandescent bulbs are more expensive in the long run. Fluorescent lights, on the other hand, make for cooler and cheaper lighting.
