The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Leather Furniture

Expert Author Kerry Gibbs

Leather furniture

It seems like having a leather interior for your vehicles used to be a symbol of status. I desperately wanted my time to come when I could afford a vehicle that had leather seats so that I too, could feel like I was somebody. Finally, my day came and I bought a gorgeous convertible with those precious seats. Within a week, I hated them.

Whenever the top was down, the leather was too hot to sit on and I'd be sitting in a puddle of sweat by the end of my drive. However, I was determined to not complain. I had my seats that I'd longed for. When I traded that car in, the salesman asked me if I wanted leather seats again and I said "no thank you." I'd hate enough of that.

Perhaps the same mentality holds true for leather furniture. Is it a sign of status or wealth? Perhaps it is. However, you won't find leather furniture in my household. It would never withstand my toddler and my two cats. Plus, I can't fathom the idea of spending more money than necessary on any kind of furniture until my daughter is grown and not climbing all over everything anymore. My sister has all leather furniture and I've seen her scowl when my daughter heads for the living room.

She's started to put large blankets over her leather couch whenever I come to visit. Her leather furniture is entirely too precious for her to have damaged in any manner. Not that I blame her, of course. I just don't appreciate the look of discontentment that she casts in my daughter's direction.

Apparently leather furniture is an excellent seller because retail stores still carry lots of it. Whether you're looking for a leather recliner or a large couch, it all still exists. Heck, you can even get leather accessories to match your leather furniture! Just keep a few things in mind if you do plan on purchasing leather furniture. First and foremost, pets and children can wreak havoc on the tender surfaces.

Sure, you can protect it with all kinds of stuff that salespeople want to sell you, but do you really want to be paranoid whenever someone lets their child into your house? If you have cats that are clawed, don't even think about it. Even if they're de-clawed, their back claws could still scratch when jumping. In the wintertime, your leather furniture could be a bit too cold when sitting on it. In the summertime, a warm house and a leather couch in the path of direct sunlight could become rather warm when sitting upon it. Don't purchase leather furniture of any kind unless you know that it will be
maintained and appreciated.
