The 5 Important Steps of the Apartment Leasing Process

If you have never leased an apartment before, the process may seem a little confusing. You may keep wondering what will happen next through the entire apartment leasing process. This uncertainty can be quite stressful, and that is why you need to know the important steps of the apartment leasing process.

1. Initial hunting for the apartment: This is the time when you will be searching for the perfect apartment to meet your requirements. The best place to start is the Internet where you can visit different websites and check out listing in the area where you would live to live. This will give you an opportunity to compare prices, check out floorplans and take a virtual tour among others. This will also help you narrow down you selection to a few apartments.
2. The personal visit: After you have narrowed down your choices, make sure you take a note of the apartment complex's office hours. Based on these hours, you can go to the office and request for a tour. This will help you figure out what the community is like. In addition, do not be shy to ask questions. Make notes of each property you visit so that you can compare them later on. Try to jot down what you liked in each apartment and what are the amenities being offered.
3. The application: This step takes place after you have decided on your final choice. You will be required to submit a rental application to the apartment manager. Usually the manager will give you the application form and any other form that the community requires you to fill out. Make sure that you carry your ID, Social Security Number, last three pay stubs and other miscellaneous information about yourself. It is during this time that your credit history and criminal background will be verified. Therefore, if you have any issues, you should be honest about them at the time of submitting your application. Sometimes, you might have to pay a small fee for the rental application. Once you submit the application, you will have to wait anywhere from a few hours to a few days to get an answer. If your application is accepted, you move to the next step of lease signing.
4. Lease signing: Once your application is approved, you will have to sign the lease for the apartment. You will be directed how to fill out the form, but usually you will be called to the office to fill it. Each page of the lease form will have to be initialed or signed. This proves that you have read the lease and are aware of everything included in it. The lease is a contract and you should pay attention and read it carefully. Take your time to read the fine print. You will be given a copy of lease. Once you have signed the lease, you will be required to pay the deposit after which you can move in.
5. Moving in: After you have signed the lease and paid the deposit, you can fix a date to move in. You will be given a set of keys to the apartment. Make sure before you move in, you check the place out thoroughly for any problems. This will ensure that you do not get saddled for damage that was already present in the apartment. After that, bring in your stuff and start unpacking.
