The 1970s - Let's Go Back

Expert Author Ridgely Johnson

Recognize hot pants and the white go-go boots? Sorry, you just dated yourself! Not to worry, I am sure you love your appointed role as baby boomer in our society. You may be surprised to learn that based on a report released in 2009 by the U.S. Census Bureau, Baby Boomer statistics show there are 78 million members of the this generation living in the United States. We have plenty of company.

You also know you are 50 if you mention an object or someone from the 1970's and receive a blank stare? This happened to me recently. Discussing a recent project to read and absorb the contents of numerous books, I mentioned memories of  Evelyn Woods' reading courses in years prior.

To my delight, a lone soul piped up, reiterating the strength and usefulness of Evelyn Woods reading programs used extensively during the 1970's. We both agreed we had not thought of the program in years.

This semi-flashback to the 1970's nibbled at my nostalgic side. I paused, did a few searches online, made a few phone calls to high school buddies. What resulted was a list of some of what made lasting impressions on us- lasting in the since that we remember quite clearly them 40 years. Thought my readers would enjoy some of what I uncovered, some specifically significant during the year I graduated from high school in 1974.

First a few basics:

  • loaf of bread cost.34
  • quart of milk cost.22
  • average salary $7,000

Other 1970s info

  • girls could not wear  pants to school, EVER
  • peasant tops with long skirts
  • puka shell necklaces
  • platform shoes
  • mood rings
  • pet rocks
  • Hot pants
  • Earth shoes
  • Peace signs * note - my sister and I were not allowed to bring ANYTHING home with a peace sign on it - communists were behind that movement
  • sleeping in curlers - yes, many nights with hair nets
  • Pet rocks
  • Open collar shirts
  • Leisure suits
  • girls wore wrists corsages to prom
  • bell bottom bell jeans with frayed edges

I'm sure you can think of some others - join me in the comments section-- make us feel better.

If you're 20 years old, I bet you can still appreciate a stud in a blue leisure suit, right?

This segment includes primarily fashions featured in the 1970's  - later I will reminisce the books, movies, television shows  we were enraptured with. Tell me you haven't forgotten Ryan O'Neil and Ali McGraw in Love Story?
