The 15 Best Songs In John Lennon's "Signature Box" Remastered CD Box Set

Expert Author Johnny Moon

The new John Lennon box set, Signature Box, features every single solo Lennon song ever released (and some that weren't released until now) digitally remastered from the original mixes for the very first time. What follows are my favorite 15 songs in this box in alphabetical order.

"Beautiful Boy" - This beautiful song is made bittersweet by the fact that the beautiful boy (John's son Sean Lennon) had to grow up without a father because a lunatic shot him on December 8, 1980.

"Bring On The Lucie (Freeda Peeple)" - Has a protest song ever sounded so joyous?

"I Don't Want To Be A Soldier" - Rocks in a delightfully menacing way. Fantastic lyrics.

"I Found Out" - Raunchy. Dirty. The truth. An incredibly powerful song. I can't quote my favorite lyric from this song because I'm not sure it's "PG" enough to be published here. Just listen to it. Brilliant.

"Imagine" - An absolute classic, how could I not include it?

"Instant Karma!" - The energy in this track amazing. It never ceases to energize me and I've heard it countless times.

"Jealous Guy" - This one really tugs at my ol' heart strings. What a beautiful song.

"Look At Me" - Yes, the guitar accompaniment sounds a lot like the guitar from "Julia" (a Lennon song from The White Album.) But it's still a beautiful song.

"Love" - It's amazing how much emotional power is packed into such a simple song.

"Mother" - This is one of Lennon's most emotionally intense songs. It's the first track from his first (and also his best in my opinion)  solo album, 1970's Plastic Ono Band. Several of the tracks on this list are from Plastic Ono Band, actually.

"Nobody Loves You" - The whole song is great but the part that I really love is at about 3 and a half minutes into it where he sings "well I get up in the morning..." I just love that bit, it's one of my favorite moments of his entire solo career. Not sure why I love it so much, maybe because it's so unexpected the way it comes in?

"Out The Blue" - Lennon's best solo work touches me in a place where music rarely does. It's the kind of beauty that makes one want to cry at the sight of it.

"Watching The Wheels" - It's sad to think that a song as great as this was on Lennon's final album (released during his life.) It makes me wonder how much more wonderful music he could have written over the last 30 years that we've been without him.

"What You Got" - The main riff on this one absolutely blows my socks off. So much energy in this song it gives me goosebumps listening to it sometimes.

"Working Class Hero" - I'm not a fan of Green Day's cover. Nothing against them in general, but their version takes attention away from the lyrics and this is a song that's all about the lyrics.
