Terrorism in India and the West

India has been a victim of terrorism much before it hit the shores of the western world.  While the western world has come out with a definite strategy to combat the menace, India, unfortunately is still struggling to formulate a comprehensive strategy to defend itself against terror attacks. The varied dynamics of Indian polity has been a major obstacle towards framing a strategy to fight down terrorism.

Terrorism today is being identified with a particular religion. So it has become very difficult to eliminate the scourge altogether. In its fight against terrorism the world has failed to drive home the message that it isn't a fight against a community but against a group that has unleashed a brutal war against humanity. The failure has been cashed in on by the terrorists. With the backing of misinformed sympathizers they have managed to sustain their movement.

Like the rest of the world the failure has had an impact on the mindset of Indian Muslims, who form a sizable section of the Indian population. Instead of addressing their sense of isolation the narrow minded political parties in India have fanned their feelings of alienation. How can a country put up a united resistance against terrorism when a section of the population, is made to feel isolated? As the West does not have to grapple with any such problem it has managed to stave off terrorist attacks to a large extent.

Once political parties in India get together to help Indian Muslims overcome their feeling of isolation, the battle against terrorism would be half won.
