Tenby - Pembrokeshire - has narrow streets where Georgian villas with intricate iron balconies jostle with fishermen's cottages. The resort's great appeal for holiday makers lies in its beaches, which together offer fine sand and sheltered bathing, and in its beautiful little harbour crowded with boats. The harbour has often been described as one of the most beautiful in Britain.
Tenby has four sandy beaches, South Beach being the largest, at one and a half miles long. The beach south of the castle and headland gives a clear view of Caldey Island, with its monastery of Benedictine monks, and access at low tide to St Catherine's Island. The old fortress on the island was one of many which were hastily constructed along the coast by Lord Palmerston in the 1860s and became known as 'Palmerston Follies'. To the north of the headland, another sweep of sand looks eastwards into Carmarthen Bay.
Much of Tenby's present character comes from its developments in the nineteenth century as a watering place by Sir William Paxton, but its origins are much older. Little remains of the Norman castle, most of it was destroyed by Cromwell's forces during the Civil War. But much does survive of the thirteenth century town hall, including the old west gate, now known as Five Arches.
The medieval St Mary's Church is enlivened by carved figures looking down from the nave roof, and by ornate chancel vaulting, while the town's past prosperity is reflected in the Tudor Merchant's House and in displays at the museum and art gallery.
Today, Tenby attracts visitors from across the UK and Europe. In the summer it is one of the busiest resorts to be found in Wales. There are many campsites and holiday homes in the vicinity, and a stay can be combined with trips further out along the Pembrokeshire National Park.
