Tell Your Children What To Do When You're Away

Expert Author Rosalinda Flores-Martinez

When parents work or go out the house, close relatives and friends nanny preschool children. In some situations, the older siblings take care of them.

Here are activities for the children (to be guided by adults):

1. Teach them to color. Get them many coloring books and crayons.

Some parents and adults say "Don't break the crayons!" Or "When you color, be sure not to mess the coloring book."

This is wrong. If you would always say these rules, some kids will hesitate to color the book, and they will not dare to use the crayons. Their enthusiasm might be lost. Don't frighten them.

Encourage and assure "It's okay if you break the crayons and mess with the book." The goal there is for them to practice holding the crayon, and to make hand strokes. This will make them creative as they can mix colors and get the drawings that interest them. Many children love to color.

2. Get them good shows to watch /DVD's.

Movies and shows that help children as they grow are abundant. Choose the right materials for your kids. Cartoons are funny and can teach moral lessons easily. Also, intelligent kids discussions can help them enjoy. Try "Sesame Street," "Dora," and "Barney," among others.

3. Offer magazines with colored pictures.

Magazine arouse the curiosity of children. With lots of colored pictures to educate them about the surroundings, their minds will open with wonders.

4. You can get them colored clays to shape/mold.

Buy the clay at your nearest mall or bookstore. These are safe to use.

5. Colored papers, bond papers, papers, sketch pads, and many pencils or pens must be available for them.

You will create for them an atmosphere of study environment. You will make them understand that home is an extension of the school.

6. Play money with numbers can be their make-believe shopping, bank, office drama play time.

Math is important. Children should love numbers as they love letters of the alphabet.

7. Lego puzzles or big card puzzles, etc. are wonder toys for boys.

Creativity with puzzles is good practice. Boys love to build blocks as they imagine creating building, cars, robots, and buildings.

8. Let them have flash cards with different pictures and the alphabet.

They can imitate the drawings on the flash cards.

9. Get them small boxes with safe toys to pay with.

Small boxes with small toys, sticks, bottle corks/caps, plastic balls, etc will help them count.

10. There are lots of toys especially made for preschool children.

A tea set, fruits and vegetables to count, plastic plates, kitchen set, garden set, tool set, medical kit, cash register, car set, are sample toys for children to enjoy. There are lots of toys you can provide children. Let them enjoy and play.
