If driving is a difficult task to master, what's more is if you are to teach your child how to drive. Ask any parent and they would all tell you that the most complex thing about raising a child is when they start driving. From simple trips to the grocery to beach sprees and proms, there's a good reason to feel nervous about your child's safety.
Studies revealed that the chance of getting involved in a car crash is greater in the first two years of driving. As such, teenagers are at higher risk of getting into mishaps. They are young and easily persuaded. They easily give in to peer pressure and often overestimate their abilities. They are also easily distracted and can't control their vehicles well at high speeds. All these affect their driving ability.
The good news though is that there are ways you can do to prevent your child from getting aggressive behind the wheel. There are ways you and your child can adopt to help reduce driving accidents. Here are some suggestions:
* Make it clear to your child when he is allowed to use the car. Set a curfew and implement it strictly. This will help you reduce driving risks.
* Buy a safe vehicle for your child. Consider its size and safety features. Make sure that it is equipped with the best components for guaranteed driving safety. And as soon as parts of it are damaged, such as the auto mirror, secure a replacement car mirror at once.
* Make your kid understand the importance of wearing a seatbelt, not drinking and driving, and preventing over speeding. These safety behaviors are essential to staying safe on the road.
* Teach your kid to stay alert on the road. Tell him to always check the car mirror on everything that's going around the vehicle.
* If possible, don't allow your kid to drive at night. Most traffic accidents happen at night because of reduced road visibility. This condition makes driving at night more dangerous for teenagers.
* Practice, practice, practice. Before allowing your kid to get behind the wheel alone, get him to practice a lot. This will give him a lot of chance to prepare for any road eventualities.
* When you are teaching your child to drive, make him feel comfortable behind the wheel. It will make him more confident of his driving abilities. Don't make him feel inadequate. This will only instill wrong ideas on him.
You can always have a professional teach your child to drive. After all, they are in the best position to train him on the dos and don'ts of responsible driving. But don't wait for the next lesson to allow your kid behind the wheel. After each lesson, repeat them the next day. This will improve retention of the lesson in their memory.
Moreover, it's best to start your lessons in vacant streets where there is no worry of bothering motorists. If the lessons go well and you think your child is ready for the real thing, then that's the only time you can allow them to drive on the highway. Remember that driving can be very simple for your kid and less stressful for you if you instill good driving habits to your child.
