Unlike other dog tricks, crawling is probably one of the few tricks that will require you to have another person to help you get your pet learn the command. But if you think you have a dog that can easily understand what you're saying then you could just be lucky and be able to teach him the crawl trick on your own.
In teaching your dog any kind of command or trick, it is always important that he gets a reward for it. Whether it's just a verbal or a non-verbal praise (like patting him on the head) or giving him a treat, it is important to note that the reward should be given while your dog is doing the trick. This is your dog's signal that you are praising him for that specific "good job" that he did. Otherwise, praising him after doing it will leave him clueless or will give him the wrong signal for the praise.
In attempt to make your dog do the crawl trick on your own, you will need first to get him lay down on the floor or on the ground, whichever the case may be. Now, with just one hand, you will need to hold him by the collar then gently pull him forward while you utter the word "crawl." At this point, your dog would most likely attempt to stand up. If he attempts to stand up, you will need to place your other hand on his back as if commanding him to stay down. Make sure that your other hand is still holding his collar. The moment your dog cooperates by staying down while you pull his collar, give him a treat or pat him on the head. Do this for several times (including giving the treat) until he gets to do the crawl trick on his own.
Now, in cases when you think your dog is either stubborn or won't have a clue on what you're making him do, it is always best to have an assistant to get the job done. So, for the crawl trick, you can hold your dog's collar with both hands while your assistant places his or her hands on your dog's back when he attempts to stand up. Your assistant will also come in handy in case your dog does not budge at all. Both of you could try to pull him forward, inch by inch while uttering the word "crawl."
Another ingenious way of getting your dog to do this trick is by luring him with a treat in front of his nose. With the treat under his nose, move your hand backward inch by inch while your dog follows the treat by making him move forward. You have to keep the treat at a low level so that your dog will move by crawling.
