"That is one small step for man, but one giant leap for mankind". Many of us remember the grainy, black and white images of Neil Armstrong as he carefully climbed down the ladder of the Apollo spacecraft and touching down on the gray, dusty surface of the moon in his NASA costume.
People cheered as history was made and what was once thought impossible was finally achieved way back in July of 1969.
Apollo 11 had brought the "Eagle" lunar module from the U.S. to the moons Sea of Tranquility.
What a sight it was to see someone from earth bouncing on the low gravity surface of the moon as they walked around in the NASA costume that would soon become a familiar sight on televisions around the world as the Apollo missions brought back more astronauts and even a moon rover to the surface of the moon.
The first space walk was also an amazing sight as an astronaut in the now familiar NASA costume floated outside his spacecraft in the blackness of outer space.
What an impressive sight a NASA costume would make as talks of more flights to the moon and even a voyage to the planet Mars are being explored.
In the movie "Apollo 13", Tom Hanks portrayed astronaut Jim Lovell on a mission to the moon until something goes terribly wrong and ground control hears the now famous words spoken by Lovell, "Houston we have a problem", a phrase that set the stage for one of the most suspenseful and griping movies of all time. Director Ron Howard captured the emotions of the mission in a way that recreated the real life events that for the world to experience for themselves. Tom Hanks in his NASA costume guiding his space ship back to earth with the help of flight director Gene Kranz and the Houston ground control team, kept the world in suspense until the damaged space craft was seen floating on its giant parachutes and landing gently in the Pacific Ocean safely returning the astronauts back home.
Today a NASA costume could be worn for a mission to Mars. Boys love the idea of space travel and going on a voyage to the red planet, not yet explored by humans, is even more enticing. Many girls might like the idea of portraying the first human to touch down on Mars just like Neil Armstrong did on the moon 40 years ago.
