TESL TEFL Certificates Include Implicit Culinary Benefits
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Among the many unexpected benefits of getting a TESL or TEFL certificate and becoming an ESL teacher overseas is that you get to sample authentic examples of that country's cuisine. It may seem strange to some people, but for many the quality and types of food that will be available in their chosen country is very important. Unfortunately, not everyone considers this before they sign their contract. Especially if you are planning on living in a less populated, rural area, it may be important to research your available food options before making any long term commitments.

Though it may be an oversimplification, people can be divided into two groups: adventurous eaters and cautious eaters. The adventurous eater loves trying new things, and they aren't afraid of the sights, smells, and textures of new foods. This is the type of person who may consider the variety of foods available in a country before they decide to teach there. They may, for example, prefer a Middle Eastern or Asian country because the food choices tend to be much different than those that are available in many western countries. However, people who love trying new foods can find plenty of unique options in any country they choose.

On the other hand, the more cautious eaters will really want to consider carefully before choosing a country. This is especially important if you have a diet that is restricted by either personal taste or health considerations. For example, if you don't care for seafood, then you may want to think twice before choosing to teach in a small village on the coast of Japan or in Vietnam. Of course, there are non-seafood options in these countries, but they will be much more limited than in other countries.

Also, consider the staple foods of the country you are visiting. If a country's staple food is rice or potatoes, make sure that this is acceptable to you because a large number of foods will have this ingredient as a base. Finally, consider teaching in larger urban areas because they tend to have a much higher variety of available food types, and you're bound to find something that suits your tastes.

Wherever you happen to fall on the spectrum of adventurous and cautious eaters, there is an ESL teaching opportunity out there that will suit you perfectly. If you haven't thought about the culinary benefits an ESL position, than you can add it to the list of reasons to get a TESL or TEFL certificate and start teaching.
