Using weights to strength train is the most popular method for this activity. However, despite its effectiveness, there are other alternatives to use to build muscle and power, all without the need for weights.

Why strengthen without weights?

There are several reasons to strength train without weights. The most obvious has to do with safety. Weights can be dangerous to use, and in rare instances has caused death. Using a nonweight training method avoids this and other unnecessary risks.

In addition to being more safe, training without weights is a convenient workout method. Routines that are weightless typically require no or very little external equipment. This means you don't have to break the bank to look good, while still being able to grow and firm up your muscles.

Methods of Weightless Strength Training

Isometrics

Isometrics is a form of strength training in which your muscle is contracted and held for several seconds. During the contraction, the person exercising pushes against an object. This can be a wall, devices manufactured for this purpose, or simply pressing your palms against each other.

This form of exercise training has been around for a long time with examples of it seen in yoga and Chinese martial arts. It's modern day revival is attributed to body builders, namely Charles Atlas.

The easiest way to use this method for strength training is to press against an unmovable object such as a wall. A more structured form of the exercise is performed with the assistance of a device call a Bullworker. This device consist of spring-resistance cylinders that have cable grips on the sides. You can either pull the cables or push the cylinders to perform an exercise.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands strength training uses elastic bands to strengthen and condition your muscles. During the exercise, the further you stretch, the more the resistance. Depending on the thickness or the material used, the resistance of the bands can be varied.

Its popularity as a strength training method has to do mainly with convenience, safety, and the bands being less expensive than a total weight set. An added bonus is that the bands are easily packed, so they store and travel easy.

Given their versatility, you can easily perform upper and lower body exercises. They can also be used to perform and strengthen your abs, and can provide a great workout for any age.

So to obtain the body you've been dreaming of, don't feel that you must use weights. These alternatives can provide great results for even the most avid health enthusiast.
