Strategies of Link Building

There are many different ways of building to your sites; the internet has become swamped with link exchange websites and automated submission tools. My theory has always been, if it seems hard work and long winded then you're on the right track. There is no simple solution to link building, hopefully by reading the guide so far you understand what makes a quality link. A key rule is always quality over quantity, so how to find places that you can get links from? A good way to find links is looking at your competitors websites and copy their web address (including the http://) go to a search engine, preferably Yahoo or altavista as they will show all the backlinks and index a little quicker than Google, who tend to show only a selection of your backlinks. Type into the search engine 'link:' then paste the URL directly after it and hit enter. This will display the location of all the links to a particular site, start by making a note/bookmarking the external links and visit them to see where you can add a link of your own. This is a nice easy way to get started as your competitor will have the same 'theme' as your website all the links you obtain through this method will more than likely be relevant.

So you have found out your competitor's links, the next step is to get creative and find your own. We are going to take a step back and look at how a search engine works. Remember learning about the phrase and site searched in Google, well it comes in handy here. Using a combination of site, phrase and negative searches we can display websites that can allow links such as forums and blogs from.org and.gov websites. In Google's search bar enter,

site:gov inurl:"blog" "your keyword" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in to leave a comment".

This will return results from.gov blogs that allow you to post comments when not logged in, by entering your keyword in a phrase match you will generally get relevant results but you may want to use the exact term match. Create a new bookmark folder in your bookmark toolbar and add each website in that you feel would be a good linking site based on what you have learnt so far. Organising your link building bookmarks by page rank is a good idea.

You can use the above search string to find directories, forums, blogs or regular websites. Talking of directories, this method of link building may be an old school and widely used but is very useful to get some good quality relevant links to your site, do not however think they will help increase traffic to your site through the directories, I have yet to come across anybody that uses a web directory to look for a website.

Creating good quality articles that link back to your site and submitting them to article directories such as ezine, go articles, article dashboard or even creating a topical page on squidoo is a good way to build relevant links. The good thing about the articles themselves is they can attract a lot of traffic and get a high page rank themselves. My rule when writing articles for search engine optimisation purposes has always been to write something of interest that represents your brand values and then edit it for keyword density and formatting links. This method has always helped me generate traffic to my sites and build my online reputation, people are more likely to add your article to dig, delicious, reddit or other social bookmarking tools, and you would be amazed at how much traffic you can receive from a good article.

This is a good start to your link building campaign and using these methods will help build relevant links, remember link building is an ongoing process and putting a strategy in place before link building gives you structure and keeps your efforts organised. There are many other ways of link building and creating content that people will link to.
