Have you ever started the day thinking that today is the day that I am not going to become the victim to my cravings? Whether it's cravings for sweet, salty, or a combination of both, cravings can be a difficult and overpowering emotion that can completely deter your weight loss efforts.
I say emotionally because although sometimes a craving can mean a nutrient deficiency, more likely than not, it's connected to an emotional deficiency. When you start eating healthier and cutting out the sugary and starchy snack foods, you go through what I call the emotional withdrawal from these comfort foods. I actually have an "all or nothing" mentality, meaning that if I cut these things out of my diet cold turkey, my emotional mind says, "well, that's it, you're never getting that again...ever, ever, ever. So, what do I do? I binge on that particular food that I've cut out because NOBODY, including myself, is going to tell me that I can't ever have something again. It's funny what we say to ourselves, huh?
So, how do can you deal with the cravings when they hit you like a ton of bricks?
1. First, you need to understand that once you start eating the right kinds of your cravings will subside significantly. After a while, when you are giving your body what it needs as opposed to what it wants, it will not be screaming "feed me donuts, give me cake, I want potato chips".
2. The less sugar and processed foods you eat, the less you will crave them. It usually only takes about 72 hours of staying away from the bad stuff before your body calms the crave monster. I'm not sure why that particular time period works, but it does so commit to 3 days of healthy eating and see what happens. You might just be amazed at how well those cravings stop.
