Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Making quitting that much more prominent, smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines. This trend has become a worldwide movement towards living longer and healthier. But with the quit smoking withdrawal symptoms so difficult to overcome, how can you kick the habit successfully?
Smoking is one of the worst things kids or adults can do to their bodies. The negative results of smoking are endless. Smoking contributes to the risk of developing heart disease, an increase in blood cholesterol levels. It increases blood pressure and weakens blood vessels. In fact, smoking harms nearly every organ of the body.
A comprehensive list of withdrawal symptoms become apparent once you quit. As in all addictive drugs, there are symptoms of withdrawal that are well known to smokers (and perhaps underestimated by non-smokers). The balance of psychological to physical dependence is generally more towards the former, as physical withdrawal symptoms are less severe than with drugs such as heroin. A smoker who tries to quit may expect one or more of these withdrawal symptoms: nausea, constipation or diarrhea, drowsiness, loss of concentration, insomnia, headache, nausea, and irritability.
Still, many people attempt to quit smoking over and over again, despite the difficulties-the cravings and withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability and restlessness. Smokers wanting to quit or to temporarily abstain from smoking can use a variety of nicotine-containing tobacco substitutes,or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products to temporarily lessen thephysical withdrawal symptoms, the most popular being nicotinegum and lozenges.
