Stop Making Another Big Mistake in Google AdWords - Not Owning Your Own Neighborhood

Google AdWords advertising, the worlds largest Internet advertising market, can drive more traffic, more customers and more business to your website and when done correctly, is highly cost effective. So what is another one of the biggest mistakes businesses make with their Google AdWords campaigns? By not using location targeting in their campaign setup, many small businesses will be competing globally with giant corporations who have millions of dollars to spend, leaving the local business owner with enormous click charges or worse, not even being able to show up on the first search results page.

While some businesses actually want to compete globally for the first page of Google, most small businesses should focus their advertising spend on where it can benefit them the most, which is in their own neighborhood. Once again, Google wants your ads to get many impressions, but all you care about really are clicks. So when you just accept the default setup in your AdWords, Google targets your ad to the whole country! You may not want to sell to the whole USA or world, or maybe you just cannot afford to compete with the giant corporations. So what to do?

Narrow down the area you advertise in by selecting location targeting in your campaign setup, and you may be able to own your own backyard on the first page of results. And even better, Google favors the local business versus a national ad campaign when you do this, which allows you to actually compete, and even beat out the big firms since as a local business, Google computes that a person who lives in your search area would be more interested in your local geographic zone.

And don't forget about getting listed on Google Maps to help people in your neighborhood find your business.
