Better understanding of the stock market and everything it consists of is no easy task. So many facets, so where to begin? Right here.

Of course, stocks are the first port of call, which is, in effect, the smallest ownership unit within a company. Those who have a share of stock, are considered and known as stock owners. The stock market is not so hard to understand, really... you just need to clarify important terms, and figure out the relationship between them. If you understand the whole picture clearly, then you can start homing in on the details. The market is not impossible to understand. Even a beginner can make a good profit playing their hand on the stock market, provided they understand the basics.

'Common stock' is the term for most of the stock in ownership within public companies. That means by holding them, the stock holders have a right to vote (voting rights) and also earn dividends. Common stock is the one they usually talk about during those all important 'financial reports' on the news. Most often whether 'it' is going up or down being the main point!

Preferred stock is another term used on the stock market. Preferred stock is a bit different. Stock owners have fewer rights, with the exception of dividends. 'Preferred stock' owners have a priority. Therefore companies related to 'preferred stock' will pay consistent dividends.

One term you must memorize and understand is this, investment. It is the driving force of the stock market. Professionals like to say investment is the smart way to use your money to make more money. Good investment often depends on the risk you are willing to take. The returns can be modest, conservative or huge. It all depends on the before mentioned term, and that is 'risk'.

While investing, you will learn, there are various ways to make money on the stock exchange. One simple strategy is the dividend play. The fact that dividends are actually your profit, or, in other words, the profit paid to you. No dividends, no profit - see easy! Stock owners are free to use their dividends however they like - reinvest or take the cash. There is always an option of selling your stock, but you should always think twice about that. Returns, after all, are linked to the performance of the company.

Where to trade your stocks? As simple as it sounds - on the stock market! It is the marketplace for sellers and buyers. A place where they trade stocks and dynamically try to find the best balance between the supply and demand. The stock market can be live (like at the New York Stock Exchange, for instance) or completely electronic, which is the case for NASDAQ.

The stock market brings a whole new world of opportunities. But, everyone has to start somewhere. So, if you're interested, willing to learn, try your luck, and test your skills, this just might be the life changing career opportunity you were looking for. Are you feeling lucky?
