The first thing that you must keep in mind before you even hit the court are the rules. Depending on what kind of league you are playing in, the size of the court and the basic game rules, will change. The reason why you have to get acquainted as best as possible with your specific rules, is the fact that you will have to explain to your players or even to your assistant coach the many violations the referees often whistle. After you get acquainted with the rules of your specific league and fields of expertise such as (junior basketball, senior basketball, junior high, college and so on and so forth), you can start strengthening your relationship with your team members and with the other coaches.
As I am referring to coaching a junior basketball team in the little league, I`m going to give you some tips on how you can improve your connection with your team members. You can do that by talking to them, asking them about the difficulties they might have at home or at school and if they have difficulties with their parents you can talk to them. Explain to them how their child might improve by being a part of your basketball team.
Or in the case they have problems at school, you can talk to the teachers and after you analyse the situation, you can give him advices on how he can improve his grades. You can even give them speeches on how not to get addicted to tobacco, drugs, gang affiliations and how they can improve their life by leading a healthy life style.
Although you did "your homework" by getting familiarized with the rule book, you must know how to pass down your knowledge to your players. A little hint to help you do that is for you to first start doing some basic drills, to see what are your players strong and weak points so you know exactly what advices, hints & tips, to give them.
By doing this you will know that your players don`t feel overwhelmed by too much information. Although by finding their weaknesses on the court, you can manage them better. Not putting them to certain tasks until they have not fully developed certain skills will encourage them because their game will not improve until you will not have any more difficulties coaching your team.
After you have done all that was said above, you can then continue by making some advanced drills, in order for your team to improve little by little, step by step. Let`s be honest you don`t want to push them from the beginning, especially when this is your first time coaching.
