Video Marketing Optimization Tips
In the marketing world today, most people have figured out that you must have a video marketing component in your plan or you are going to lose site visitors. It is as simple as that. What most marketers fail to realize is that you can't just throw together any old thing and have it work effectively. So how do you get off the ground? Just keep the following points in mind as you prepare, produce, and publish your video...
After your video is produced, you must optimize it for the web. That means a couple of different things, the most important thing being that the video must be able to start playing fast. You probably have experienced this before when visiting a website. They had some video content, but it loaded so slowly that you hit the back button before it could play. Making your video play quickly is crucial to your success.
This next optimization tip will be balked at by most experienced media producers. Most quality videos are produced using certain rules to make things look nice, such as the rule of thirds and good lighting. However, in web video, you are going to have to violate some of those rules. Remember that the potential customer or lead is not watching your video to be entertained, and they aren't watching it on their big-screen TV. They are at their computer searching for information, and they are going to see your video in a tiny window on your web page. It is more important in this case to communicate effectively than it is to make sure the persons eyes are 1/3 of the way down the screen like you would with entertainment type video that is destined for DVD or Blu-Ray.
You had better engage your audience, or they are going to hit the back button. You have only a few seconds to capture a web visitor's attention, and if you lose it, they are gone forever. Now this doesn't mean that you need to be all cheesy or cute. You just need to be engaging. This is no different than if you didn't have video on your site at all. The entire site must be engaging and provide the information that the visitor is looking for, and video is just an extension of that.
You may be asking whether or not you should host your own video, or upload it to a video sharing site such as YouTube. Unfortunately, there is no cut and dried answer for this because it depends on your audience and what you are trying to market. If someone has searched for your product and found you, or if you are branding your product, then hosting the video on your own web host will probably be better. You will have more control over quality settings; however, depending on how much traffic you get, there may be a problem with bandwidth. On the other hand, if your product would benefit from being found without direct searching, or if you need "internet buzz", and feedback on your video, then YouTube might be a better fit.
There is great power in having people comment on your video. It lets you know that they liked it (or not), and it also tells you more about the audience your video is reaching so that you can focus your marketing efforts to that specific audience.
