Anyone who wants to can make a video using their camera phone and upload it to the internet. Sometimes these videos are effective. More often they are not. In order to increase the effectiveness of your marketing video, follow the basic rules...
Put your camera on a tripod or stand of some kind to steady it. There is nothing more irritating than trying to watch a video that shakes because the camera man had consumed too many cups of coffee just before the shoot.
Speak clearly and enunciate. People don't enjoy listening to someone mutter or speak intelligibly. If they can't understand you they will look elsewhere for a product or service to meet their needs. So do as your mother always taught you and speak clearly.
Create a setting that gives credibility. A marketing video shot with you sitting on your living room sofa does not give the appearance of credibility. So shoot in front of an office building, or warehouse, or even in front of the company van. Make sure that the name of your company is visible in the background. Or perhaps you want to shoot sitting in an interior scene behind a desk. Pay attention to the background set because it can make or break your credibility.
Use props appropriately. If you are making a how to video you will need props. These props may include tools, supplies, and the object you are creating at several different stages. For an example, think of cooking shows on TV. They will crack the eggs into the bowl and begin to beat them, but in order to save time, they will trade that bowl off for another one in which the eggs are already beaten.
If your marketing video is a demonstration of the product you have for sale, then your product will be your prop. Make sure that you get video shots of this product from several different angles so your customers can see exactly what they are getting before they buy.
Just because your video camera has a lot of fancy bells and whistles, doesn't mean it is appropriate to use them. Have you ever gotten a headache from watching an advertisement? That is because the advertisement was too busy. Simplicity is important. For example, if you find it necessary to zoom in on something and then back out, then either zoom slowly or even better, take the time to cut the actual zooming from your video. Show the broad shot, and then fade gently into the close up. Your customers will appreciate you immensely.
Follow the old idiom, practice makes perfect. Remember all those movie scenes in which a director is yelling, "Cut!" There is a reason for that. People make mistakes. It's a commonality among us. So you are bound to make mistakes in the production of your marketing videos. Give yourself plenty of time to try, try again.
Video marketing might be the latest trend, but following the basic rules that have withstood the test of time will keep the attention of your customers. In a market that is inundated with competition, keeping the attention of your target audience is what it is all about.
