How to Easily Write Articles to Drive Content
You've built a great site and now are trying to do all you can to drive traffic to said site-through newsletters, mailers, and online articles posted throughout the web. The problem... with everything you have to do in the day, article writing seems to get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list and you are left struggling with a blank white screen and a blinking cursor at the end of the day, exhausted and uninspired...and the "Write Articles" to-do gets pushed to the next day's list, yet again.
Here are a couple of ideas to get you going and get you motivated:
1. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill. You're not writing a PhD dissertation or even a college term paper. You're writing an article for the web, and the best length is anywhere from 400-600 words. That's about a page, maybe a page and a half. It's not as bad as you are imagining it might be.
2. Find some good templates out on the web (article templates exist) and use them as the backbone of your site. It's that much easier to fill in your own content and ideas over laid-out text-at the very least, you're not having to stare at a white page!
3. Find out a lot about whatever it is you are writing about. Read about it online, in multiple sources. One tip is to read several articles, online or printed out, and then get a snack or take a walk. When you get back, sit down at the computer and write up your thoughts based on what you've read. By so doing, you can crystallize your own thoughts but not be copying whatever else is out there, already published. Of course, it's worthwhile to take the time to peek back at your "reference" material to ensure you're not actually copying something out there-but even if it's too close, you can simply reference your source material. Give credit where it is due and you are fine.
4. Write as close to topic as possible-don't try to be an expert in everything. No one is. Your articles will be scattered and you'll find you've set yourself an impossible task. Figure out what makes sense to write about and cover that. And feel free to outsource other content to relevant experts.
5. Pay attention to what's around you. Once you determine what your "main topic" is going to be, you'll be surprised to find how often you hear about the very same topic in conversation, on television, in other articles...if it is of interest to you, you'll likely hear a lot about it and not mind researching more. All of these sources of information can help to make your article writing go more smoothly.
6. Write quickly. Belaboring your writing makes you doubt yourself. Instead, just try to plow through an article and then go back to check it for spelling, grammar, and "truth".
Most importantly, if you are interested in your topic, you'll find you can write about it--quite a bit!
Don't procrastinate-just start writing.
