Keeping a blog fresh is critical to making sure that you develop readership, followers, and spread the word about what you're doing-if, indeed, that is the purpose of your blog. Some bloggers maintain their posting only to update friends/family on growing kids, or to keep a defined list of followers up to date on comings and goings. That's fine, but for those who want their words to spread to further corners of the internet...there are a few things to consider in writing and maintaining a blog.
While you read these four tips on keeping your content fresh, remember to keep simplicity in mind...
1. The content on your blog, whether it is standalone or part of a greater site, should be fresh and current or you'll turn off readers and never garner any followers. There are lots of options out there for getting content and articles on how to keep a blog fresh, but think about the whole picture before you haphazardly launch a blog onto your site. You can't simply post a few random thoughts and then let the blog sit untouched; if you launch a blog, you're making a commitment to keep the site up to date (at least through those blog posts).
2. Consider including pictures, video links, etc in your blogs. It makes the content certainly more eye-catching; it's an easy way to fill some space, and pictures and/or video usually get some comments and conversations flowing. Again, be sure to think through repercussions; are you posting pictures of your kids, and if so is it ok for the online community at large to see them? Are you including pictures that you have the rights to? Assuming all is well-thought-out this is a good option for keeping a blog and a site looking good and dynamic.
3. Find like-minded sites or blogs that you can link to or share content with. Many people read blogs in order to find out what's going on in specific areas (for instance, a design blog). They are more than happy to follow links to other interesting design sites and resources; in fact, that's partly why they read the blog in the first place. If you keep your content fresh and important, you're not going to lose your audience by giving them other sources; in fact, you'll probably find your following grows as more people go back and forth between linked sites.
4. Twitter about your site or your blog. The main point of Twitter (if there is a point, and that is certainly up for debate in certain circles) is to give a head's up to key articles or sites out there in the online community. So use the resource to direct folks to you, if you have something important posted or something of note somewhere on your site. Don't abuse it; no one will tune in to a slew of self-promotional infomercials, but it can be a good resource to spread the word, especially amongst the young and plugged in set.
Keeping content and blogs fresh can be time-consuming but think outside of the box and beyond simple posting and you might be surprised how easy it is.
