Sowing Annuals Directly

Expert Author Cindy Hansen

Some people are put off growing annuals because they have sown them in sit outside and the seeds have failed to come up or the results have been sparse and patchy. The secret to success is good soil preparation and careful sowing. The soil does not need to be very fertile, because many annuals can tolerate fairly impoverished conditions. A week or two before sowing cultivate the soil and remove any weeds, stoned and other debris. Rake the soil level and remove any lumps.

Cover with clear plastic to warm the soil and encourage weed seeds to germinate. Hoe lightly just before sowing to kill off the new flush of weed seedlings. The easiest way to sow directly is to scatter the seed in rows. For a more natural effect, you need to combine several varieties, mark out the seed bed into irregular blocks. A series of arcs drawn with sand is usually recommended, but any shape will do.

Press a cane into the soil to create drills at the correct spacing, varying the direction of the drills in each block. Sow the seed thinly, at the recommended spacing, and lightly cover with soil or compost soil mix. Weed as necessary, and when the seedlings are large enough to handle, remove the weakest to leave the plants at the correct spacing. If time is short or if you have a large area to cover, you can broadcast sow. In this case measure out sufficient seed for each sector and place it in the palm of your hand. Then carefully scatter it over the area as evenly as possible by tapping your hand gently. Use a soil rake to mix the seed into the surface soil. Weed and thin out overcrowded plants as before.
