Some of the Most Unforgettable Boxing Films Throughout the Years

Over the years, there have been some magnificent films about the sport of boxing. This comes as no surprise, as boxers endure one of the toughest training regimens of any sport and require unbelievable amounts of sacrifice and discipline. Unlike team sports, most of the time boxers have no one to blame but themselves if they are defeated.

When it came to choosing my favorite boxing films of all time, it ended up being harder than I thought. Without further ado, here is my list.

I will start out with the obvious. The original Rocky film has to make the cut. One of several boxing films to win the Academy Award for Best Picture Of The Year, Rocky is an American classic.

In my opinion, one of the greatest films ever made is Raging Bull. That it happens to be a film about boxing just makes it that much better. This is not your typical Disney inspirational sports film. It is dark and gritty in a way that only Martin Scorcese could create.

Million Dollar Baby certainly makes the cut. I don't want to give anything away for those who have not yet seen it, but everything about this movie is just amazing. Clint Eastwood has become the best grumpy old man in the industry.

I would be remiss to not include another Rocky film on this list. In my opinion, the best Rocky film was Rocky 4. Dolph Lundgren stars as Ivan Drago and plays one of the most despisable villains of all time. I still can't forgive him to this day for what he did to Rocky.

Starring Humphrey Bogart, The Harder They Fall is an American classic that was released in 1944. This film takes a journalist's point of view and focuses on the darker side of boxing, tackling subject matter such as the rigging of fights.

After reviewing this list, it is no surprise that so many films about boxing receive critical acclaim. Let us, as movie fans, hope that future boxing films live up to the standards that their predecessors have set.
