Some Very Common Causes of Depression

Feeling of 'blues' every now and then in the journey of life is a normal occurrence. However, if the feeling of meaninglessness and desolation take possession of a person and he or she remains in that state for prolonged periods then that is a sure sign of depression. Feeling of despondency due to setbacks, struggles and disappointments during the whole business of living happens to all the best of us from time to time but depression is something deeper and could even be fatal. Therefore, proper treatment is necessary in this condition.

When your state of mind prevents you from doing even the daily stuff of life like eating, sleeping, working, studying or even having fun impossible then one should not ignore it because this is a sure sign that something is seriously wrong somewhere.

Depression can have a number of causes and the first step to finding out if one is afflicted by this 'disease', is to understand these causes. Sometimes depression runs in the family and it is very much possible for anyone to inherit this tendency for being depressed.

Some people are simply pessimistic and always see the 'dark side' of things due to which they are constantly depressed. Another cause can be a feeling of low self esteem and self-worth, which makes the person become stressed at all times. Some people also become depressed after they suffer a major illness like a heart attack, cancer, Parkinson's disease etc. Hormonal disorders in some people can trigger a deep feeling of despondency and hence depression. There are people who have a very low capability to deal with serious loss, difficult relationship, financial problem, and since they are ill equipped to deal with such situations they go into depressive moods. Sometimes there can be a combination of many factors like psychological, genetic and environmental, that can all act together or separately to cause depression in a person.

It is common knowledge that women suffer far greater from depression than men. The reason for this can be hormonal factors like changes in menstrual cycles, abortions, post partum or pre-partum periods and post and pre-menopausal periods in their lives.

Men may also suffer from depression but sometimes they are less likely to admit to or express it as it may be seen as a sign of weakness.Depression can be very serious, hampering one from leading a normal life so it should not be treated lightly.
