Solar Power - The Future

Solar power, at the moment, is proving a difficult 'sell' to people currently on grid connected main electricity. The actual base cost of installing a solar system on its own outweighs any intrinsic cost benefits. Therefore to make it attractive for people to use, governments often provide grants or 'feed in tariffs' designed to make going solar a profitable undertaking. Well this could all be about to change..

Quantum Solar Cells offer the potential in the same space to generate up to double the power. Now that may not sound that exciting, but current solar cells are very inefficient at taking the sunlight that hits them and converting it into useful power; a large amount of the sunlight either bounces off or is lost as heat. Hence they generating electricity is so expensive via solar cells. Now with an effective doubling of efficiency that changes things to be economically in favour of going solar on its own, no grants or special tariffs required..

What else is occurring, well there is promising development in battery cell storage capacity using buckyballs - essentially the same size battery will hold up to 10 times the charge. So as long as these new batteries don't end up costing 10 times as much, they could become quite common in situations where energy density is a problem - say in cars and other portable energy storage situations. i.e. we might get solar powered cars if these two technologies combine (or at least solar change assisted cars). At the very least your mobile won't need charging for over week!
