Last month, I finally finished adding the finishing touches to my very own solar pool heater which I had been working for week or so after referring to a guide online that was about an easy do it yourself (DIY) project to build your own solar pool heater. I found it quite easy to follow and for most of the time, I was thinking, "This stuff is pretty simple. Why didn't I think of doing this before?". Most of the stuff written in the do it yourself book online involved more or less a bit of "common sense". Since I am very addicted to solar energy projects and other do it yourself renewable energy source projects, I decided to write this article to give you guys some simple tips that can go a long way in making sure that your solar pool heater functions properly and works with minimal fuss.
So without further adieu, the following are some simple tips you can implement along with the guides online about DIY Solar pool heaters:
1. Outdoor swimming pools work better with solar pool heaters - This was one of the things that I learnt when I was attempting to install my solar heater. Although it was not relevant to me since I had only an outdoor swimming pool, I did some research on the internet wondering if indoor swimming pools would work better since they are closed and hence allow lesser heat to escape. Although this did turn out to be the case, I learnt that outdoor swimming pools had the slight edge to be more advantageous than indoor ones because of the heat that is naturally produced in the water due to the sun's rays hitting the water. There is some natural heat produced in the water because of the direct contact with sunshine which goes a long way in conserving energy and reducing the amount of solar energy required to heat up the pool to the temperature required.
2. Backup plan - Do not, for whatever reason, decide to just rely on the solar pool heater to completely heat up the pool. Some days, there will be non-sunny days or some days there might be some problem with the solar pool heater. In these cases, it is necessary and important to have a backup plan in the form of your traditional sources of heating that can heat up the pool for you.
3. Reduce the pollution - This is not necessarily a tip but just something that I thought would be a kind of confidence booster. If you are still thinking twice about whether to set up a solar pool heater for heating your pool, then think of all the good you are doing to the environment and all the living beings on the earth. Plus, if coal was burnt to heat up your pool in a single swimming season, enough fossil fuels would be emitted to equal that emitted by your car driven every day for a year. Furthermore, on top of all this you are actually saving a lot of money in this process.
4. Might be a little expensive now but a few years from now you will be counting the money - The thing about a "solar pool heater" is that heating can take up so much fossil fuels to be generated and also form a significant part of your electricity bill that it would be better to use alternate sources of heating if available. This explains the rising popularity of solar heaters. Also, according to the Department of Natural Resources US, solar pool heaters are the top most sold pool heating equipment today.
5. Cheaper if done by yourself- Let me make this clear to you right now. By building a solar pool heater by yourself, you can save an immense amount of money. Check out some of the best DIY guides available online and learn how you can build complex solar heating equipment in just a matter of days that too with significantly lower installation costs.
So, build your own solar pool heater and save big on money and help our environment and help control pollution.
