The recent US polls suggest that solar power is becoming increasingly important renewable option in United States, with many people believing that this is our best option to cut our dependence on fossil fuels, and also tackle climate change issue. Some US states, most notably California, have already started using this energy source on larger scale, and other states like Nevada, Arizona and Florida have also been adding more solar power capacity to their energy portfolios.
However this does not mean that solar power will soon become important energy source that will satisfy large share of US energy needs. Fossil fuels will still remain dominant sources of power for many years to come because most renewables (solar included) still fail to reach the level of costs that would made them equal with fossil fuels. If we look only at renewables then we could see that solar power still has a lot to do to become the most popular fuel option in United States because at this point solar energy doesn't only trail wind but also hydropower and biomass.
Still, many experts expect that solar power will be the main renewable energy source in the future, if not for anything else then because of gigantic energy potential that our Sun has. This future looks very far from where we are now but with the proper scientific and technological development perhaps we could even reach this future before the end of this century.
After all, in order to preserve our environment for future generations we need more clean energy options, and solar power is definitely one of the best, if not the best clean energy option.
